Epenarra (Wind Turbine) – Upgraded in 1999, the Wind-Solar-Diesel power system at Epenarra has demonstrated the impact that wind power generation can have in small remote communities in the Northern Territory. Special considerations at such sites are needed due to the lower than usual average wind speeds.
Tidal Power – With close proximity to the equator, the northern end of Australia experiences large changes in seawater levels on a daily basis. Providing a natural ‘funnel’ for these tidal movements, the Apsley straight between the Melville and Bathurst Islands near Darwin has been a focus of interest for economic tidal power generation. Novolta’s staff were involved in the testing of a prototype kinetic energy tidal unit.
