The central parts of the Northern Territory, around the Barkly Tableland, experiences substantial and reliable winds. They are due to the effects of a jetstream.
For several years, Novolta has been monitoring wind speeds at various locations on behalf of the Power And Water Corporation. Wind speeds are being measured at different heights, ranging from 10m to over 80m.
The locations are wide-spread, so as to be able to provide a good indication of the geographic extend of the effects of the jetstream. Thanks go to Telstra for allowing the installation of anemometers on several of their microwave transmission towers.
Indications are, that there are several locations/remote communities that are suitable for the installation of small to medium sized wind turbines.
The decision whether or not to go ahead with this will rest with PowerWater and/or the NT Government.
